COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The No. 11 Maryland women's basketball team was edged by Atlantic Coast Conference opponent Virginia 60-57 Sunday afternoon. The Terrapins held a one-point lead with under three minutes to play, but the Cavaliers surged to take the win.
Freshman Alyssa Thomas led the Terrapins with 14 points and eight rebounds, while junior Lynetta Kizer added 12 points and nine boards.
The Terrapins led 55-52 with three minutes left before Ariana Moorer scored on a drive, Simone Egwu added a layup and Ataira Franklin hit a jumper in the lane to make it 58-55.
After Anjale Barrett scored for Maryland, Whitny Edwards made two foul shots for the Cavaliers with 11.2 seconds left. Barrett then launched a 3-point attempt under pressure that bounced off the backboard an instant before the final buzzer sounded.
Moorer notched 17 points, Edwards scored 13 and Franklin had 11 for Virginia (14-13, 4-8 Atlantic Coast Conference).
It was the second straight loss for the Terrapins (20-5, 6-4 ACC), who shot 39 percent from the field and committed 17 turnovers.
The Terps held the advantage on the glass, 43-35.
Maryland donned pink uniforms, and coach Brenda Frese wore a pink blouse, in honor of breast cancer research.
The Terrapins won the first game between the teams last month in overtime, and the rematch was similarly close.
Maryland also recognized its 1978 ACC Championship team at halftime. Many of the members from that inaugural title team were present.
The Terps will play host to No. 7 Duke Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in Comcast Center. For tickets, please visit the Terrapin Ticket Office online at umterps.com or call 1-800-IM-A-TERP. Parking will be free in the lots surrounding Comcast Center.
