Mike Morrison is in his second season as Maryland's pitching coach after serving on staff at Coastal Carolina for two seasons. Morrison was also a standout pitcher for the Chanticleers from 2013-16 where he compiled an 11-4 record with a 2.93 ERA and 15 saves and helped the program win the 2016 College World Series.
In his first season at Maryland, the Terrapins had one of the best seasons in program history, notching a school record 48 wins en route to a No. 15 national seed and the first ever NCAA Regional in College Park. The Terps also captured the 2022 Big Ten Regular Season Championship, their first conference title since 1971 and first outright conference title since 1965.
Morrison groomed the Terps' the vaunted weekend rotation of Nick Dean, Ryan Ramsey, and Jason Savacoo in 2022. Ramsey finished the season as a second-team All-American and first-team All-Big Ten selection, while also being named to the College Park Regional All-Tournament Team. The junior hurler also tossed just the 20th nine-inning perfect game in college baseball history, which earned him National Player of the Week honors. Ramsey's 11 wins were the second-most in a single season in school history. Ramsey was selected in the 13th round of the 2022 MLB Draft by the Kansas City Royals.
Savacool was also named an All-American by multiple outlets and was a first-team All-Big Ten selection. His 2022 season saw him enter the school record books in single season innings pitched (4th), strikeouts (4th) and wins (5th). He was also named to the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team training camp. Dean was a third-team All-Big Ten selection.
In 2016, Morrison was a key fixture on the 2016 College World Series team at Coastal Carolina where he was named a Captain. Three different outlets voted him as a First Team All-American. He started Game Two of the College World Series vs Arizona where he at the time set a record for strikeouts in a National Championship game with 10, a 3-2 Coastal Carolina win.
After a stint in the Chicago White Sox organization, Morrison returned to his alma mater where he was named Director of Player Development and Scouting. Morrison took over as pitching coach in 2021 after Pitching Coach Drew Thomas stepped away during the season. Morrison was instrumental in the development of players such as Alaska Abney, Zach McCambly, and Chase Antle during his time at Coastal Carolina.
Not only did Morrison return as a coach, but he also went back to school to earn a pair of graduate degrees in Business Administration and Education. This comes after Morrison majored in Multi/Interdisciplinary Studies with a minor in Communications.
