Joann Engestrom was brought on as the Terrapins' volunteer assistant coach in the summer of 2016. She brings eclectic field hockey pedagogy to the Terps having experienced all levels of hockey.

Engestrom is a local teacher and club coach in the Maryland area. She earned a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology with a focus in physical education and health at Temple University in 2005. She earned Regional All-American, All-Atlantic 10, and All-America East Conference honors during her time with the Owls. Engestrom experienced the USA National pipeline, competing in our USA Field Hockey programs, such as Futures, Futures Elite, High Performance Summer League in her career.

“Joann brings a wealth of knowledge and influence across all levels to our program,” Meharg said. “We have been coaching colleagues for many years and Maryland is fortunate to have her.”

In 2003, Engestrom played on the U-23 Junior National Team and the U.S. National Team, training for the 2004 Olympics and earned a spot on the Japan and Spain tours. She gained coaching experience as the Temple University undergraduate assistant while completing her degree.

She began her teaching career with Montgomery County Public Schools, where she continues to grow the game with today’s youth. In 2012, she earned her masters of science in Educational Leadership, along with a Maryland Administrative Certification at Hood College.

Engestrom helped to restructure the Washington Wolves Hockey Club in 2007. For the last nine years, Engestrom has led the Wolves to rankings of 8th and 12th in the nation.
