Head coach Brenda Frese hired Patrick Estes as the Assistant Director of Basketball Performance in the summer of 2015. Estes oversees the Terrapins’ strength, fitness and nutrition regimens on a daily basis.
Estes is an Applied Functional Science (AFS) practitioner, movement specialist, and strength and conditioning coach. A former college lacrosse player, Estes has always had a passion for athletics and helping others reach their potential. Estes has worked under highly-respected coaches, such as Todd Wright and Logan Schwartz with the University of Texas men's basketball team.
“Patrick is a really exciting addition to our program,” head coach Brenda Frese said. “He sort of reminds me of another Kyle Tarp, who we hired a few years back and is the best in the business. Patrick is high energy and eager to learn everything he can. He has a background in many different areas that will help our team. He’s open-minded and wants to collaborate with other great people in and around our program. He’s going to make a big impact on our players and everyone here at Maryland. He went to high school in Maryland, so he knows Maryland is a special place. Having a guy like him working with our players every day is a huge advantage for us and keeps us cutting-edge. We always want to be at the forefront of what’s best for our players.”
His experience at Texas led him to study AFS at the Gray Institute, under world-renowned physical therapists Gary Gray and Dave Tiberio. Estes is currently continuing his education thru the Postural Restoration Institute.
Estes has worked with high school, college, NBA, and NFL athletes. Estes comes to College Park after working at the University of Denver with the 2015 NCAA champion men’s lacrosse team, as well as the swimming, tennis, volleyball and skiing programs.
Estes earned a bachelor’s degree in exercise science from Lenoir Rhyne College in 2012. He is certified by the Gray Institute Fellow of Applied Functional Science (FAFS) and is one of only 20 strength coaches in the country to hold the certification.
Estes is also a USA Weightlifting Sports Performance Coach (USAW), a National Strength and Conditioning Association Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), a Gray Institute Nike Golf Performance Specialist (GPS) an American Council on Exercise Personal Trainer (ACE) and studied functional soft tissue transformation (upper extremity) and at the Postural Restoration Institute (Impingement and Instability).
