
Terps Knock Off No. 23 Tennessee To Win Maryland/adidas Classic - Maryland Terrapins

GERMANTOWN, Md. - Maryland captured the 2003 Maryland/adidas Classic with a 3-1 victory No. 23 Tennessee (ranked No. 11 by Soccer America) at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Germantown, Md.
Sophomore Kimmy Francis (Richboro, Pa.) was named the tournament Offensive MVP as she scored the game-winnig goal to put the Terps ahead 2-1 in the 31st minute with a blast from the top of the box. Tennessee's Keeley Dowling was the Defensive MVP.
The Terps (5-2-1) controlled the game in all facets outshooting the Lady Vols (6-2), 15-8.
"I was very happy with how many players contributed to this victory," said head coach Shannon Higgins-Cirovski. "It was a total team effort and I pleased with how we finished our chances and really playd solid defense."
Maryland jumped out a quick 1-0 lead as sophomore Simone Dekker (Ringwood, N.J.) banged in a rebound from two yards out just 2:13 into the match. Dekker converted a shot taken Katie Ludwig (Mount Laurel, N.J.) from the far right wing that was punched out by Tennessee keeper Vanessa Phillips-Bosshart. Ali Andrzejewski (Lutherville,Md.) had taken the first shot in the series from the top of the box that the keeper saved to start the flurry.
Tennessee tied the game as Kristen Doukakis scored in the 29th minute. She knocked in the goal from about 10 yards out as she took a pass from Lyndsey Patterson and beat Maryland keeper Kristen Barnhill (Charlottesville, Va.), who committed as the ball was shot into the low right corner.
The Terps regained the lead 31st minute as Francis blasted home a shot from the top of the box to put the Terps up 2-1. Francis took pass from Andrzejewski, who had taken a pass from defender Lindsay Niehaus (Cincinnati, Ohio), who brought the pass up field.
