COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland women's soccer team will have a busy slate this week. The Terps conclude a three-game stretch of games in the state of Virginia as they travel to Fairfax to battle local rival George Mason (6-4) on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
Maryland returns home to Ludwig Field for the first time in nearly two weeks on Friday as it hosts Rutgers (5-5) at 7 p.m. The Terps will face inter-state foe Navy (9-3) on Sunday night at 7 p.m.
Maryland has dropped three straight games with the last coming in heart-breaking fashion as they Terps lost at No. 23 William & Mary, 3-2 in overtime last Sunday. Despite the hard times, head coach Shannon Higgins-Cirovski is happy with her team's continuing work ethic.

The Series Against George Mason
The Terps hold a 5-4 edge in the nine meetings against the Patriots. Maryland has won the last four meetings against George Mason including a 4-2 win over the then-No. 23 Patriots at Ludwig Field last season on Sept. 23, 1998. In that contest, Jackie Mynarski (Somers, N.Y.) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal with 15:50 left in regulation. Courtney Beirne (Westminster, Md.) recorded her second career college point on an assist in the win. Riki-Ann Serrins (Mission Viejo, Calif.) made three saves for the victory.
Over the last four games in the series, Maryland has outscored George Mason 14-2 including three shutouts (5-0 in 1995, 2-0 in 1996, 3-0 in 1997). In the 1997 meeting, Vita McKenna (Burlington, Ontario) scored her first collegiate goal in her first career start.
All-time the Terps are 2-2 at George Mason winning the last two meetings in ?95 and ?97.
The Series Against Rutgers
Maryland and Rutgers have met just one time since Maryland's team was elevated to varsity status in 1987 with Rutgers holding a 1-0 advantage. The then-No. 14 Rutgers Scarlet Knights topped the Terps 6-1 in 1989 as part of the WAGS Tournament in Fort Belvoir, Va.
The Series Against Navy
Maryland has recorded shutout victories in all three meetings against Navy, all in College Park, outscoring the Mids 13-0. Maryland shutout Navy 4-0 in the first game in 1987. After a nine-year hiatus, the Terps blanked Navy 4-0 on Oct. 22, 1996 and 5-0 on Oct. 26, 1997.
In the 1997 win Ali Wolff (Richmond, Va.) recorded four saves for the whitewash. Jackie Mynarski has scored a goal in each of the Terps last two wins over Navy.
Terps Play Ranked Teams
Maryland faces one of the nation's toughest schedules this season, taking on 10 teams that are ranked or receiving votes in the NSCAA women's soccer poll of Oct. 4. The ACC features five teams ranked in the top 25 led by No. 3 North Carolina. Also ranked from the conference are 10. Clemson, No. 12 Virginia, No. 13 Wake Forest and No. 21 Duke. Maryland's 1999 schedule features three non-conference foes that are ranked. UCLA is No. 8, USC is No. 14, while William & Mary is No. 19. Baylor is first among teams also receiving votes.
Maryland recorded its biggest win of the year upsetting then-No. 9 Duke on Sept. 19 in overtime, 4-3 as Sara Gustafson (Reisterstown, Md.) scored two goals including the game-winner in overtime.
Of Maryland's seven losses, five have come against teams currently ranked in the top 25 (USC, UCLA, Baylor, Virginia and William & Mary).

Freshmen Draw Starting Nods
Shannon Higgins-Cirovski has depended heavily on freshmen and sophomore-transfer Sara Gustafson (Reisterstown, Md.) this season. Six different first-year players have started for the Terps in 1999. In fact, over the Terps' first 11 games, 53 percent of the starting positions have been held by freshmen or Gustafson.
Leading the way for the freshmen starters have been defensive stalwarts Lindsay Givens, Carly Viher (Mentor, Ohio) and Sally Harrison (Virginia Beach, Va.). The trio has started all 11 games this season.
Up front, Gustafson has started all 11 games along with midfielder Valerie Lawrence (Silver Spring, Md.). Kim King and Dana Jarzyniecki have each started four games also this season.
King started her Maryland career on fire scoring in her first two games. King is the first Maryland freshman to score in her first two college games since Emmy Harbo scored in each of her two games in the 1995 season against Virginia Tech and George Mason.
King Notches Three Off Bench
Kim King has added offense to the Maryland lineup when she enters the game off the bench. For the third time this year King scored after entering the game on a substitution, when she scored at with 2:50 left in the first half of the William & Mary game.
This season, King ranks tied for second on the team in goals scored with three and tied for third in points with six.
Jarzyniecki Tallies First Point
Dana Jarzyniecki recorded her first college point as she assisted on Kim King's goal against William & Mary. The Rochester native passed off a corner kick from fellow freshman Lindsay Givens to King, who banged it home to give the Terps a 2-0 lead in the game.
Jarzyniecki had her best chance to score her first college goal in the William & Mary game as well, recording three shots, two of which were stopped late in the game.
Givens Continues To Assist
Lindsay Givens recorded an assist for the third time on four games against William & Mary. Givens, who has an incredibly long throw-in, was credited with that assist off a corner kick.
Givens, who has started all 11 games, also has assists against Duke and James Madison.
Mynarski Moving Up Charts
With the game-tying goal against Duke on Sept. 19, Jackie Mynarski now stands alone in eighth place on the Maryland all-time goal scoring list with 17 career goals. She passed Stefanie Magro (1991-94). Mynarski is also eighth on the all-time points list with 43, just three points behind Audra Weber (1991-94) and tenth all-time in assists with nine, behind Tania Sheremeta (1990-93) and Terri Rich (1992-95).
Mynarski leads all Maryland players in points (nine) and goals (four) this season.

It's A Family Affair
With the hiring of Shannon Higgins-Cirovski on Jan. 13, 1999, Maryland became the only major Division I school in the nation to have a husband-and-wife tandem coaching soccer at the same institution. Maryland men's coach Sasho Cirovski, who has coached the Terps since 1993, has taken the men's program to new heights with last season's appearance in the national semifinals, its first since 1969.
Higgins-Cirovski came to Maryland after coaching the United States Under-18 team, a team which she led to an undefeated record in 1998. Prior to her stint with the national team, Higgins-Cirovski coached George Washington for seven seasons, leading the Colonials to a 69-59-11 (.539) record during her tenure. She led GW to its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 1996, while earning Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year. She also earned the honor in 1994.
Including her 11 games at Maryland, Higgins-Cirovski has a career record of 72-66-12 (.517) in 150 career games coached.
Higgins-Cirovski had a decorated career as a player at North Carolina, graduating in 1990. She was named Soccer America's National Player of the Year in 1988 and 1989 and consensus national Player of the Year in 1989. Over her four-year career at Chapel Hill, the Tar Heels won four national titles compiling an 89-0-6 record.
