Post Game Quotes From The ACC/Big 10 Challenge

Nov. 30, 1999

MARYLAND HEAD COACH GARY WILLIAMS:

"During the game we knew that Jaacks and Oliver had really been a good combination inside and outside for Iowa, so we really did some work trying to stop those guys."

"I was really pleased with our team defense. Our defense has been good this year, consistently throughout our first games. Where we've struggled, where teams have made runs at us is when we can't execute our offense as well as we do at other times."

"Tonight we lengthened the time that we ran good offense. We did a great job coming out. This team has the potential to become a good passing team. When you shoot the percentage that we did in the second half, it is usually the result of passing. We passed the ball really well and we got guys really good looks."

"Iowa has traditionally been a team ... where they play hard. I think that is part of going to Iowa, you just assume that you are going to play hard if you get a scholarship. With Steve Alford it is the same as the previous coaches there. They all play hard, they never quit and I knew they were going to make a run on us to start the second half. You have to be prepared for that nowadays in College basketball. I thought we handled that well. We kept our composure a little better than we did against Notre Dame when they made their run, so hopefully we're learning in those situations."

On Terence Morris "[Terence] is one of those guys who is really hard to guard because he is really quick inside and a good enough shooter at 6'9 to hit the outside jump shot."

"We're working to get better. We played a pretty good schedule so far and it doesn't get any easier with Illinois coming up. We're going against some pretty good teams with senior players and we don't have many [ourselves]. We're trying to learn on the job, so to speak, and see if we can continue to get better."

IOWA HEAD COACH STEVE ALFORD:

"Maryland is a very good team. They're well-coached and they did a better job executing than we did tonight. They are the first team this year that really pressured us."

"We took a lot of ill-advised shots. Four off our shots were blocked. We shot three NBA three-pointers, two shots with the wrong hand. Bad shots usually lead to buckets by the other team."

"I though the start to both halves was the key to the game. We didn't start well either time. We're still a young program and I try to teach lessons to our kids and we're trying to figure out what we can and can't do."

"[Terence] Morris was efficient with his shots taken tonight. I was impressed with his patience. He let the game come to him. He's very talented and you have to be impressed with how he did."
