    Assistant Coach
Entering his fifth year on head coach Buzz Williams’ staff, Wabissa Bede joins Maryland in his first full season as an assistant coach.

Bede worked alongside Williams, who was also his coach for two seasons at Virginia Tech, for four years at Texas A&M. With the Aggies, Bede served as the program aide which was an integral part of setting the culture within the program.  In that role, Bede assisted with all aspects of the program, recruiting organization, student-athlete development, advanced analytics, and camps.

“Coach Bede played for us at Virginia Tech, and once his playing career was over, he started his coaching career in a support role for us at Texas A&M. I am grateful he’s joining us at Maryland in a coaching role. His experience as a player in our program provides wisdom to connect with players from the start,” said Williams. “That connection shows up every day within our player development program and workouts. He has a gift for knowing how to push players the right way. His growth rate year after year has been remarkable, and I have no doubt he’ll keep a similar trajectory here at Maryland.”

Bede was recruited to Virginia Tech by Williams during his tenure in Blacksburg and he played his first two seasons for him.

An accomplished point guard in his playing days, Bede was a four-year letterwinner for the Hokies from 2017-2021 and helped Virginia Tech to three NCAA Tournament appearances. He led the Hokies in assists as a junior and senior and finished his career with 351 which ranks on the school’s top 10 list. Nominated for the 2021-22 Senior CLASS Award, Bede amassed 453 points, 279 rebounds, 351 assists, 97 steals and 30 blocks in 117 games.

As a junior in 2019-20, Bede registered 177 assists with just 53 turnovers for the nation's sixth-best assist-to-turnover ratio at 3.34. His 5.53 assists per game ranked fourth in the ACC and his 177 total assists ranks as the third-most in a season in Virginia Tech history. An excellent student, Bede was a two-time ACC All-Academic selection and was nominated for an ACC Honorary Postgraduate Scholarship in 2020-21.
