Devin Johnson

  • Title
    Associate Head Coach
Devin Johnson enters his first year as the Terps’ associate head coach in 2025-26 and his 14th overall as a member of head coach Buzz Williams’ staff.

A former student-assistant for Williams at New Orleans, Johnson has served in a variety of roles on his staffs beginning in 2011-12 at Marquette, Virginia Tech and Texas A&M. With connections throughout the professional ranks, Johnson excels at designing workout programs to enhance player development, and he serves as the team’s liaison to the NBA, as well as academics.

“Coach Johnson has been with me at every stop since my first head coaching job at the University of New Orleans. I have an immense amount of trust and appreciation for the type of person and coach he is. HIs path from manager, to associate head coach is truly remarkable,” said Williams. “His ability to build genuine relationships with players is a rare gift, and paired with his basketball acumen, especially on the defensive side of the ball, makes him one of the most impactful coaches in the country. As he starts his 15th year on staff, I am extremely grateful he is with us.”

Known for his strong recruiting skills and team defensive strategies, Johnson played a key role in Texas A&M’s success during his tenure in College Station. He helped Texas A&M reach the NCAA Tournament in three consecutive seasons, while winning 20-plus games for four straight years. The four consecutive 20-win seasons was just the second time in program history to do so behind the 2004-11 squads that did so seven straight years. The three straight NCAA Tournament appearances also marked just the second time in Texas A&M history to do so as well.

Additionally, Johnson helped the Aggies reach the semifinals of the SEC Tournament three times including a pair of trips to the Championship game.

Johnson came to Texas A&M in 2019 from Virginia Tech where he was elevated to assistant coach for the 2018-19 season after four seasons as the Director of Player Personnel. Johnson was instrumental in the Tech’s run to the Sweet Sixteen in 2018-19 as the Hokies ranked No. 2 in the ACC in defense (62.1 pts/G). During his time in Blacksburg, Johnson helped guide the Hokies to consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances for the first time in program history.

Prior to his arrival at Virginia Tech, Johnson spent two years at Marquette on Williams’s staff. He played a crucial role in community initiatives and summer camps in addition to supervising the program’s video needs, including staff scouting efforts and exchange procedures.

Before entering the collegiate ranks, Johnson worked for the NBA’s New Orleans Hornets from 2008-12. During his five-year tenure, Johnson served as director of group sales and the group sales and game night coordinator.

Johnson was a member of Williams’ staff as an undergraduate assistant at UNO during the 2006-07 campaign. He was involved in game day activities associated with the program, as well as assisting with the team’s opponent scouting process and game plan development. In 2007-08, Johnson served as the head JV coach and assistant varsity coach at his high school alma mater, Zachary High School.

A 2008 graduate of the University of New Orleans, Johnson earned his bachelor’s degree in business management and earned a minor in sport management.
