COLLEGE PARK, Md. - In a gutsy team effort, the University of Maryland wrestling team came back from a deficit through six matches and won the final four duals to defeat Old Dominion 25-13 in Ritchie Coliseum.
After the Monarchs took a 4-0 lead at 157 pounds in the opening match of the afternoon, freshman Sal Aquia (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) responded with an emotion-filled pin of Alex Plasencia in the final minute of the third period at 165.
Old Dominion won three of the next four matches by a combined total of 10 points to give them a 13-9 edge. At 174, George Sable defeated Chad Masemer, 9-5; Josh Fannon topped Mike Tomaino, 8-5, at 184; and heavyweight Leevi MacDonald won 8-5 over Jule Dolci.
At 125, Joe Guzzio (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley) won a very tight 3-2 decision over a very quick Paul Jimenez. Marylands Brandon York (Gaithersburg, Md./Damascus) followed up with a major decision over Jimenezs brother, Paul, 12-4 at 133 pounds.
With only a three-point lead, Terp freshman Bryan Robinovitz (Belle Mead, N.J./Hillsborough) stepped onto the mat with a bandaged shoulder after injuring it against Howard on Friday night. After struggling during the first period, Robinovitz used a number of technical moves to repeatedly takedown Chris Blair for the 12-6 win.
In the final match of the afternoon, captain Ted Harlan (Glenmore, Pa./Haverford Prep), the only starting senior on the squad, won by injury default after his opponent, Chad Filson, was unable to continue in the final period although Harlan had a comfortable lead.
