Gillian Cote Named EAGL Co-Gymnast of the Week

February 16, 1999

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Freshman Gillian Cote (Fredericksburg, Va./James Monroe) was named the East Atlantic Gymnastics League co-gymnast of the week today, along with Pittsburgh's Danielle Alba, after setting a new Maryland all-time high in the all-around this past weekend against No. 12 West Virginia and Temple. This is the second time this season that Cote has earned the honor.

Cote's score in the all-around of 39.300 placed her in first overall and also marked the fifth time in five meets that she had recorded a score of 38.0 or better in the all-around competition. Cote also registered a career-high and team season-high on bars (9.825) and the second best all-time beam score (9.9) to finish in first and second place, respectively. She also placed second on floor with a score of 9.825.

The Terps defeated the No. 12 Mountaineers and Temple this weekend by scores of 195.175-193.100 and 195.175-183.150, respectively. With the win over West Virginia, Maryland knocked the Mountaineers from the unbeaten ranks and also picked up its first regular season win over them since 1989. Maryland's win over Temple marked the eighth consecutive regular season victory for the Terps over the Owls dating back to 1995.

The Terps (10-4, 3-2 EAGL) will compete again Wednesday night at 7 p.m. in Ritchie Coliseum when they take on Southeast Region rival George Washington (6-8, 1-1 Atlantic 10).
