DURHAM, N.C. -- Despite winning four of the 10 weight classes on Friday evening, the Maryland wrestling team came away with a team victory, posting a 20-19 win over ACC rival Duke. The Terrapins earned two pins, at 125 and 157, to put the match out of reach for the Blue Devils. With the loss, Duke drops to 5-9 overall and 0-3 in the conference. Maryland improves to 5-3 on the year and 2-1 in the ACC.
After falling behind 7-3 following Alex Hunt's 5-3 victory for Duke at heavyweight over Jule Dolci, Maryland's Joe Guzzio came back at 125 to pin Duke's Brijal Padia at a time of 2:07 to make the score 9-7. Duke earned decisions at both 133 and 141 to take the lead at 13-9 with four weight classes to go. But the Terrapins secured an 18-1 victory at 149 when Maryland's Ted Harlan defeated Duke's Bill West. That was followed by a pin by Jake Stork of Maryland against Duke's Deuce Harris to make the score 20-13.
The Blue Devils won the last two matches. Senior Matt Mapes collected a 6-2 decision at 165 over Sal Aquia, while freshman Tom Cass won 4-2 at 174 over Chad Masemer. But the decisions left Duke two points shy of the win.
