COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Senior Meg Griffin (Topeka, Kan.) returns to her home state this weekend as Maryland begins a four-match road trip that takes them to Missouri, Kansas, Florida State and Arizona State over the next two weeks. Griffin, who plays both No. 1 singles and doubles for the Terps, has posted a 6-1 record in the spring season. She and doubles partner Lorraine Bittles (Nashville, Tenn.) were ranked No. 9 nationally in the preseason by the ITA and are undefeated at 6-0. While playing for Topeka West High School, Griffin was ranked No. 1 in the Missouri Valley and won the state championships. Maryland returns home to College Park to host Yale on March 27 and Clemson and Georgia Tech on the weekend of April 3-4. All three matches are slated to begin at noon.
PAVELKO IS PERFECT AS TERPS RECORD SECOND SHUTOUT OF SEASON
Senior Adrienne Pavelko (Vienna, Va.) posted two perfect matches as the University of Maryland women's tennis team topped George Washington, 9-0, at the Tennis Bubble. Pavelko, playing at the No. 5 spot, defeated Megan Goldsmith by a score of 6-0, 6-0. The former all-metro high school player also teamed up with freshman Courtney Perkins (Seattle, Wash.) in doubles for an 8-0 win.
Also for the Terps, Meg Griffin and juniors Stacy Walkowitz (Coral Springs, Fla.) and Lorraine Bittles swept the top three positions. At No. 4, sophomore Chrissie Terrill (Plano, Tex.) improved to 7-0 on the year by smothering the Colonials' Katarina Stastny, 6-2, 6-2. The teams of Terrill-Walkowitz and Griffin-Bittles both won in doubles to also remain undefeated at 6-0.
TERRAPINS CLIMB ALL OVER MOUNTAINEERS IN HOME OPENER
Maryland won every set in both singles and doubles to sweep West Virginia, 9-0, on Feb. 28 in the Terrapins home opener. Chrissie Terrill improved her undefeated spring record to 6-0 by defeating Sharon Price by a score of 6-1, 6-3. Griffin, Walkowitz and Perkins also upped their individuals records to 5-1. In doubles, the teams of Griffin-Bittles, as well as Terrill-Walkowitz remained perfect at 5-0.
MARYLAND COACH JIM LAITTA
In his ninth season, Jim Laitta (Eastern Kentucky 89) has taken what once was an underfunded program onto the national tennis scene. He has led the Terps to the schools first two NCAA appearances as well as finishes in the top half of the conference for the past few years. In 1996, he was named both ACC and NCAA Region I coach of the year by his peers. Before Maryland, he was the head womens coach at Mississippi State University. While there, the program finished in the national Top 20 and captured an NCAA doubles championship. Laitta played collegiately at Eastern Kentucky University where he was team captain and played No. 1 singles and doubles.
