No. 25 Maryland Sweeps College Softball Doubleheader from La Salle

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Senior Kelly Shipman threw her sixth career no-hitter to lead Maryland to a 5-0 victory in the first game and Beth Radford hit her sixth home run of the season to lead the Terps to another 5-0 win in the second game and doubleheader sweep of La Salle at the North Fields Softball Complex. Shipman's victory in the first game gave her a school-record 23 pitching wins this season.

Maryland improves to 40-18 with the victories while La Salle falls to 13-23. The Terps are ranked 25th in the latest USA Today/NFCA poll. The Terps have won a school-record eight consecutive games and their 40 victories this season is an ongoing school record.

Shipman struck out 16 and allowed only three runners during game one. She walked one, one was hit by a pitch and another reached on a fielder's interference ruling by the umpire. Shipman struck out eight of the final 10 batters she faced and did not allow a runner to advance past first base during the game. She has pitched a school-record three no-hitters this season.

Centerfielder Michelle Burrell led the Terps in game one with one home run and three runs scored. She hit her career-high sixth home run of the season on the fourth inning. Rightfielder Annemarie Browne also hit a solo home run in the fourth inning. It was Browne's career-high third of the season. Designated hitter Cortney Madea put Maryland on the scoreboard in the first inning with a two-run home run of her own. It was her career-high fifth home run of the season.

Pitchers Danielle Carpenter and Amanda Bettker teamed to shutout La Salle in the game two. Carpenter allowed zero runs in two hits through the first three innings while Bettker allowed zero runs on two hits over the final four innings. The Terps pitching duo limited the Explorers to four singles during the game. Bettker gained the victory; her record his now 11-7.

First baseman Allison Beier reached base twice via a single and a base on balls and recorded seven putouts and one assist in game two. She was the only Explorer to reach base more than once during the second game.

Maryland travels to Virginia for an ACC doubleheader Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
