Baltimore, MD - A balanced attack and solid defense down the stretch paced Loyola (MD) to a 50-43 win over Maryland in the Greyhounds season-opener here on Tuesday evening.

Loyola (1-0) jumped out to a quick 14-6 lead with 14:19 remaining in the half, but Maryland went on a 19-9 run over the final 10 minutes of the first half to knot the score at 27-27 going into the lockeroom.

The Greyhounds ran out to a five-point lead to open the second half, but the Terrapins went on an 8-3 run to take the lead at 38-36. Loyola answered with an 8-2 run of its own, keyed by Shannon Cohen, who made three consecutive steals, to take a 44-40 lead, one it would not relinquish. Cohen finished the game with a game-high seven steals.

Both teams did not shoot particularly well this evening, as they combined to shoot 34.5 percent from the floor, and 57.5 percent from the free-throw line.

Jina Mosley and Corey Hewitt paced Loyola with 11 and 10 points, respectively, while Cohen and Laura Slater each added seven off the bench. Maryland was led by Marche Strickland who netted 11 points and Deedee Warley who contributed 10.

This is the second consecutive win over Maryland for the Greyhounds, and third in the past six meetings. Loyola is also the only Maryland-based school to defeat a Chris Weller-coached Terrapin team.
