Baltimore, MD - A balanced attack and solid defense down the stretch
paced Loyola (MD) to a 50-43 win over Maryland in the Greyhounds season-opener
here on Tuesday evening.
Loyola (1-0) jumped out to a quick 14-6 lead with 14:19 remaining in the
half, but Maryland went on a 19-9 run over the final 10 minutes of the first half
to knot the score at 27-27 going into the lockeroom.
The Greyhounds ran out to a five-point lead to open the second half, but the
Terrapins went on an 8-3 run to take the lead at 38-36. Loyola answered with an
8-2 run of its own, keyed by Shannon Cohen, who made three consecutive steals, to
take a 44-40 lead, one it would not relinquish. Cohen finished the game with a
game-high seven steals.
Both teams did not shoot particularly well this evening, as they combined to
shoot 34.5 percent from the floor, and 57.5 percent from the free-throw line.
Jina Mosley and Corey Hewitt paced Loyola with 11 and 10 points,
respectively, while Cohen and Laura Slater each added seven off the bench.
Maryland was led by Marche Strickland who netted 11 points and Deedee Warley who
contributed 10.
This is the second consecutive win over Maryland for the Greyhounds, and
third in the past six meetings. Loyola is also the only Maryland-based school to
defeat a Chris Weller-coached Terrapin team.
