COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Coming off a rigorous road trip during spring break, Maryland returned to College Park for the first match of a three-game home stand against Yale on March 27. In arguably the most pivotal match of the season, the Terps defeated the Bulldogs, 8-1, with a complete team effort. Individually, senior Meg Griffin (Topeka, Kan.), junior Stacy Walkowitz (Coral Springs, Fla.), sophomore Chrissie Terrill (Plano, Tex.) and freshman Courtney Perkins (Seattle, Wash.) each earned their ninth win of the season.
This weekend, Clemson and Georgia Tech travel to Maryland for the first of seven consecutive regular season ACC matches. Clemson and the No. 28 Yellow Jackets both look to avenge 6-3 home losses from last year to Maryland.
SUN DEVILS TAKE ADVANTAGE OF JET-LAGGED TERPS
No. 15 Arizona State concluded its five-match home stand with an 8-0 win over the Terps. The Sun Devils (8-5, 0-2 Pac-10) swept singles play as well as the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. No. 1 doubles was not played. Sun Devil freshman Allison Bradshaw, who had recently jumped up in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings to No. 36, defeated Meg Griffin, 6-3, 7-6 (3), to notch her 21st singles victory of the season. Arizona State was the final stop on a 5,000-mile roadtrip for Maryland that also took the Terps to Florida State.
TERPS FALL TO FSU IN ACC OPENER
Maryland fell to 7-3 overall and lost its ACC opener, dropping a 7-0 decision to No. 35 Florida State. The Seminoles improved to 15-3 overall, 2-0 in league play. Junior Kia Asberg and freshman Marina Raic extended their winning streaks to 12 matches apiece for the Seminoles. Asberg improved her dual match record to 17-1, while Raic jumped to 16-2. FSU got a big win at No.1 doubles were Gallovits and Duxin teamed to upset No. 11 Lorraine Bittles (Nashville, Tenn.) and Meg Griffin.
MARYLAND COACH JIM LAITTA
In his ninth season, Jim Laitta (Eastern Kentucky 89) has taken what once was an underfunded program onto the national tennis scene. He has led the Terps to the schools first two NCAA appearances as well as finishes in the top half of the conference for the past few years. In 1996, he was named both ACC and NCAA Region I Coach of the Year by his peers. Before Maryland, he was the head womens coach at Mississippi State University. While there, the program finished in the national Top 20 and captured an NCAA doubles championship. Laitta played collegiately at Eastern Kentucky University where he was team captain and played No. 1 singles and doubles.
