Seven Terrapin Gymnasts Named to EAGL All-Academic Team

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The East Atlantic Gymnastics League announced the 1998 All-Academic Team and Maryland was represented with seven gymnasts: seniors Stacy Breidenbach Hillsdale, N.J. / Pleasant Valley (Pa.), Megyn Byrnes (Mahopac, N.Y. / Mahopac) and Alexis Moran (Minersville, Pa. / Minersville), who recorded GPAs of 3.91, 3.27 and 3.35, respectivley. Junior Christine Holcombe (McMurray, Pa. / Peters Township) also made the team with a 3.42 GPA, as did sophomores Elize Burke (Bowdoinham, Me. / Mt. Ararat) and Shelly Hernandez (Silver Spring, Md. / Montgomery Blair) who had GPAs of 3.37 and 3.27, respectively. Rounding out the Terrapins all-academic team was freshman Karyn Fein (Charlotte, N.C. / Providence), who in her first year at Maryland, finished with a GPA of 3.50.

Breidenbach, in making the EAGL All-Academic Team, was one of 41 gymnasts who were repeat selections from 1997, and was the only repeat selection for the Terrapins from 1997. She was also only one of 14 gymnasts who recorded a GPA above a 3.8.

The EAGL, which consists of Maryland, New Hampshire, North Carolina, N. C. State, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Towson and West Virginia, placed 71 total gymnasts on the all-academic team including a record 14 from N. C. State. The total is up seven from a year ago when 64 EAGL gymnasts were recognized.

Maryland's seven representatives ranked it sixth overall behind North Carolina State, North Carolina (12), New Hampshire (10), Pittsburgh (9) and Rutgers (8), respectively. Rounding out the field were Towson (6) and West Virginia (5).
