COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland women's soccer team will play host to Fairfield University in the first round of the 1998 NCAA Women's Soccer Tournament as announced by the NCAA on Sunday night. The Terps are making their school-record fourth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance.
The Terps were chosen as an at-large selection after finishing in fifth place in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Maryland, which won 10 games this season and averages nearly 15 wins a season in the last four years, enters the NCAA Tournament with a 10-10-1 record. The Terps finished with a 3-4 record in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
During the course of the season, the Terps defeated three ranked teams and played 11 teams that received invitations to the NCAA Tournament.
Maryland has appeared in the NCAA Tournament in each of the last three years. The Terps advanced to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals in both 1995 and 1997.
Maryland has met Fairfield once previously in the history of the program. The Terps defeated the Stags, 3-0, during the 1995 season on their way to the championship game of the ACC Tournament and the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament.
Fairfield, which won the championship of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Sunday with a 1-0 victory Loyola (Md.), enters the tournament with an 18-1 record. The Stags only loss of the season was to Yale, 2-1, on Sept. 11. The Stags have won 15 consecutive games entering its game against Maryland.
The game will be played on Wednesday at Ludwig Field on the Maryland campus. The time of the game will be announced Monday.
