College Park, Md. - University of Maryland's Meg Griffin (Topeka Kan./Topeka West) has been chosen as the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's East Region Senior Player of the Year by a committee of coaches. With this distinction, Griffin is a finalist for the national award to be announced at an awards ceremony on May 26 in Athens, Ga.
Griffin (20-16) led the Terps to school history earlier this month as the team qualified for the NCAA Tournament in singles, doubles and as a team for the first time ever. Playing in both the No. 1 singles and doubles spots this year, Griffin earned her second straight All-ACC selection and she is currently ranked third in the East Region individually and first for doubles.
On May 24, Griffin will become only the third Terp in school history to compete in the singles bracket of the NCAA Tournament. Jeri Ingram, in 1989, and Claudia Borgiani, in 1985, reached postseason play after both were ACC No. 1 singles champs. This year, she was the No. 1 seed at the ITA East Regional in the fall and won the William & Mary Invitational.
In doubles, Griffin and partner Lorraine Bittles (Nashville, Tenn./Brentwood Academy) have been ranked nationally for the past two seasons. The duo are also the first players in Terrapin history to qualify for all four grand slam events (National Indoor Championships, National Clay Court Championships, Riviera All-American Tournament and the NCAA Tournament).
Griffin came to Maryland in 1996 following the Terps' 1-7 conference record from the previous season. After finishing her junior c5areer ranked No. 31 nationally, she made an immediate impact on the team and within two years, she finished in the top 10 for singles in the East Region.
