
Terps Look for Best ACC Finish in School History

COLLEGE PARK, Md.--Despite facing three of the toughest ACC teams in a period of only five days, No. 41 Maryland is still in the hunt for its best conference finish in school history. This weekend, North Carolina St. and Wake Forest come to the Cole Field House courts to try and keep the Terps from attaining that coveted fifth win. The Demon Deacons and Wolfpack both topped Maryland last season with tight 5-4 victories and finished second and third respectively in the ACC.

DUKE COMPLETES CAROLINA SWEEP TO COOL OFF RED HOT TERRAPINS
No. 3 ranked Duke recorded its ninth-straight win this season with an 8-1victory against Maryland on Sunday. The lone point for the Terps came from the No. 2 doubles team of sophomore Chrissie Terrill (Plano, Tex.) and junior Stacy Walkowitz (Coral Springs, Fla.) who have been outstanding in recent matches. The duo, who are 13-1 this spring, combined to clinch wins in three of the last four matches for Maryland. In singles, the Blue Devils earned straight-set wins in all six matches. Senior All-America Vanessa Webb won her 30th match of the year at the No. 1 spot with a 6-2, 6-1 decision against Meg Griffin (Topeka, Kan.) to pace the attack.
TAR HEELS EDGE TERPS WITH STRONG SINGLES PLAY
With solid all-around singles performances, No. 27 North Carolina secured a 5-4 win over Maryland, despite defaulting in the No. 2 doubles match. Although the Terps won all three doubles positions, UNC won five of six singles matches . At No. 1 singles, North Carolinais Jessica Zaganczyk defeated Meg Griffin, 6-2, 6-2. Freshman Caroline Hill and junior Cena Hackler also netted wins at No. 2 and No. 3 singles for the Heels. At the No. 6 spot, freshman Courtney Perkins (Seattle, Wash.) defeated Emi Shaffer for Marylandis lone singles victory. In doubles, the top-seeded pair of Griffin and Lorraine Bittles (Nashville, Tenn.) defeated Zaganczyk and Hackler, 8-6. Perkins and Adrienne Pavelko (Vienna, Va.) were also victorious at No. 3 doubles, 8-3.
MARYLAND COACH JIM LAITTA
In his ninth season, Jim Laitta (Eastern Kentucky e89) has taken what once was an underfunded program onto the national tennis scene. He has led the Terps to the schoolis first two NCAA appearances as well as finishes in the top half of the conference for the past few years. In 1996, he was named both ACC and NCAA Region I Coach of the Year by his peers. Before Maryland, he was the head womenis coach at Mississippi State University. While there, the program finished in the national Top 20 and captured an NCAA doubles championship. Laitta played collegiately at Eastern Kentucky University where he was team captain and played No. 1 singles and doubles.
