MARYLAND GOLFERS TRAVEL TO PEPSI AND CLEVELAND CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Maryland men's golf season continues quickly in just this second week of the 1999 spring campaign as the
Terps venture to Greenville, N.C., and Aiken, S.C., for a pair of tournaments following a sixth-place finish last
weekend at the Birkdale Collegiate Golf Classic in Charlotte, N.C.
Maryland followed the strong play of juniors Keith Unikel (Potomac, Md.) and Gary Mankulish (Laurel, Md.) to tie for sixth place with Virginia Commonwealth, while trailing North Carolina, Nebraska, Augusta State, Kansas and Colorado State. Unikel (71-73-74, 218) finished in a tie for seventh place at two-over par while Mankulish (72- 73-75, 220) finished tied for 13th, just two strokes back.
At the Pepsi Intercollegiate this Friday and Saturday, March 19-20, Maryland returns to the site of its only tournament championship last spring, capturing the team title behind the play of Miguel Rivera (Bel Air, Md.) who placed 10th at one-under par. This week, the Terps battle 25 teams in defense of their title on the 6,700-yard, par 72 track at Bradford Creek Golf Club.
Two days later, the Terps battle 11 teams in competition at the Cleveland Golf Collegiate Championships played at Palmetto Golf Club. Maryland finished third in the tournament last spring, then played at Forest Hills Golf Club, as Unikel shot one-under to place fourth among individuals.
