ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Maryland scored eight runs with two outs in the top of the ninth inning to rally past UNC Asheville 14-7 Wednesday afternoon in a college baseball game at Greenwood Field.
The Terps (5-10-1) trailed 7-1 in the eighth inning but scored five times to cut the lead to 7-6 before exploding with two outs in the top of the ninth to win the game over the Bulldogs (6-19).
With two outs and nobody on base, Eric Beer doubled down the right-field line to keep Maryland's hopes alive. UNC Asheville reliever Jason White (1-1) then got the count to 0-2 on Terp third baseman Ray Gemmill. Gemmill sent an 0-2 pitch down the left-field line for a double to score Beer and tie the game at 7-7. Casey Trout then followed with an RBI-single to score Gemmill and give Maryland an 8-7 lead. Craig Munroe then followed with a two-run homer and suddenly the Terps led 10-7.
Maryland scored four more runs in the inning to lead 14-7. Reliever Mike Ginsberg (1-1) pitched the final two innings to pick up the win for the Terps.
UNC Asheville led 2-1 early and then scored five times in the bottom of the sixth to lead 7-1. Josh White hit his fifth homer of the year, a two-run shot to help build the lead. Steve Deyo and Eddie Woods added RBI-singles and another run scored on a passed ball.
Maryland fought back with five runs in the eighth inning. The Terps got five hits and took advantage of a costly UNCA error to cut the led to 7-6.
UNC Asheville will play next at Elon College Saturday at Noon, while Maryland will play Furman at 3 p.m. Thursday afternoon.
