Post-game Quotes from the NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse

May 30, 1999

SALISBURY STATE

Coach Jim Berkman
"We thought that we could attack their short sticks because of the physical matchup. We thought that we could get to the goal on the short sticks. They are a team that traditionally slides extremely quick, and we wanted to take advantage of the slides. We wanted to draw the slides, make a pass, and the second pass, go inside. We drew the slides. We took advantage a little bit of their impatience."

On this national championship vs. the two that he won in 1994-95: "This one's a special one because it's a new era. No one on this team played on either one of those two teams. So nobody's ever had a touch of the championship game. We really thought we should have been here the last three years with some of the good players that we had. These guys are excited, especially the four or five seniors who were on this team. They paid their dues, especially (midfielder) Josh Tidwell, who's a fifth-year senior. They're excited to be back here, but definitely today is just a little bit different Salisbury State team than in the past."

On face-off specialist Chris Martin: "He's probably one of the most unheralded lacrosse players in Division III history, I think. For three weeks in a row, all we've heard about is the opponent's face-off guy. Chris just responded to that challenge and did what he had to do. Possession of the ball wins lacrosse games. He doesn't get many stats in the statistics column, but he does a lot. The players on the team and the coaches know how integral he is to our success."

Goalie Jason Tarnow on winning the national title: "It's all our dreams come true. All of us came here for that reason. Funny things happen. When I had to leave Michigan State with them dropping the program, I thought that was the end of the world at the time. But that was long ago. I can't really be happier to finish out this chapter in my life next to these guys (on the podium) and the whole team and Salisbury State University."

Peter Troup on the play of the defense and goalie Jason Tarnow: "The reason we were able to do so good and make things happen was because of the defense and Jay Tarnow. The kid was making unbelievable saves all day long. He was just pulling them out of everywhere. So, it was his incredible saves that got us pumped up."

MIDDLEBURY

Coach Erin Quinn on getting behind early: "We were, at that point, more focused on the overall play of our team, not one big goal. And that's what we were trying to focus on. It doesn't help that you're down 4-1 and now you're down 5-1. Last week (a 15-14 victory over RIT) we were down 9-5 at half against an RIT team that has great offensive talent, and I think that experience kind of helped us feel confident that we could get things going again and regroup and play better. And that was really our focus kind of getting back to what got us here and trying to loosen things up a little bit."

On the Salisbury offense: "I think their offense is pretty consistent with what they're going to do. Over the course of a game, you're not going to stop them, and we knew that. The difference more, I think, was some of the unsettled goals, some of the fastbreaks and the unsettleds, pick up the groundball, push it up the field and score some easy ones. We knew, with the talent that they have, that they were going to get some 6-on-6 goals. I'm actually happy with our 6-on-6 defense over the course of the game, given their shooting ability and the athletes that they have."

Adam Pascal on setting the record for most points (24) in a single NCAA tournament: "I don't take much satisfaction in that at all. I'll probably come to (a future) tournament and see if my name's still in the book, but there's not much satisfaction because personal success can only take you so far. All year (we've) been talking about the 37-strong (roster). Personal success is something secondary to team success."
