COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Twenty-sixth ranked Maryland returns to competition on the links this week as the Terrapins join eight other schools at the 46th Annual Atlantic Coast Conference Golf Championships. The three-day, 54-hole competition begins on Friday at the Old North State Club at Uwharrie Point in Badin Lake, N.C. Three rounds of 18 holes will commence each morning at 8:30 a.m. on the 6,900-yard, par 72 course which hosts the tournament for second consecutive year, and the fourth time in five years.
Next week, the Terps participate in the first of two remaining regular season tournaments * the Wofford College Invitational at Carolina Country Club in Spartanburg, S.C.
Currently tied for sixth in the East Region, Maryland is vying for one of eight positions in NCAA regional play which tees off May 20-22. The top eight teams qualify for the NCAA regionals.
TERPS ENTER FIELD TOP-RANKED TEAMS
This week's ACC Championships field reads like a list of who's who among NCAA top-ranked golf contenders.
Heading the list are top-five ranked Clemson and Georgia Tech. NC State, North Carolina and the Terps have
found themselves among top 35 rankings each week, while Duke and Virginia have consistently been in the top
50.
Individually, this week's cast includes 17 golfers ranked among last week's Golfweek/Sagarin top 100, including Maryland's Unikel. Five Clemson and Georgia Tech golfers lead the field, all ranked among the top 20.
MARYLAND HISTORY IN THE ACC
Terrapin coach Tom Hanna takes an experienced team to this week's championships where Maryland hopes
to challenge for its best finish in over two decades. Entering the tournament with the fifth-highest national ranking
among a field of high-caliber opponents, Maryland hopes to eclipse fifth-place finishes in 1996 and 1994 * a task
the Terps have not accomplished since finishing third in 1978.
For historical reference, Terp junior Keith Unikel had not yet been born (10-26-78) the last time Maryland finished among the top four teams at the ACC Championships. Since 1994 when Hanna was named the ACC Coach of the Year, Maryland has finished either fifth or ninth in each of the last five seasons.
TEAM RANKINGS
Maryland is ranked 26th by Golfstat this week, 27th in the MasterCard CGF Rankings and 35th in the
Golfweek/Sagarin ratings. Individually, junior Keith Unikel is ranked 47th in the latest Golfstat Cup Rankings for
college men's golf individuals. He is 86th in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin ratings.
