RALEIGH, N.C. - University of Maryland extended its win streak to a school record-tying six consecutive games here Saturday by posting wins over Kentucky and Temple on the second day of the Triangle Classic.
The Terps, who improved their season record to 10-6, registered a 13-0 victory over Kentucky and a 3-1 win over Temple.
Maryland advances to the single-elimination championship bracket play on Sunday.
Senior Kelly Shipman tossed a five-inning no-hitter to lead the way against Kentucky. Winning for the fifth time this season, Shipman faced just one batter over the minimum, allowing her counterpart Colleen Brody to reach base when she hit her with a pitch to lead off the second inning. She struck out five batters.
Offensively, the Terps pounded out a season-high 14 hits, including a grand slam by sophomore Michelle Burrell in the Terps' four-run first inning. Burrell's blast, the first homer of her collegiate career, cleared the center field fence. It followed back-to-back singles by Jennifer Potzman and Cortney Madea and a base on balls to Beth Radford. Burrell, who finished the game with six RBI's, also drove in runs in the third and fifth innings. Fawna Lackovic also had a big day at the plate, going 3 for 4 and driving in four runs.
Against Temple, the Terps got all the runs they needed in a two-run first inning to provide freshman pitcher Danielle Carpenter with her first career victory. Carpenter yielded just three hits in six-plus innings before getting relief help from Shipman in the seventh. Potzman was the big hitter for the Terps, going 2 for 2 and driving in all three runs. She hit a two-run homer -- her second HR of the season -- in the first inning and added an RBI double in the sixth. Beth Radford, who went 2 for 3 at the plate, was the only other Terp with multiple hits.
The six consecutive wins by the Terps, who are 4-0 in this tournament, equals the school record set in 1996 and equaled last year.
