1999 Men's Golf Notes
Twenty-fifth ranked Maryland travels to Carolina Country Club in
Spartanburg, S.C., this week for the Wofford College Invitational. It
is the first of two remaining regular season tournaments prior to NCAA
Regionals which tee off May 20-22.
Maryland, sixth at last week's Atlantic Coast Conference Championships hosted at Old North State Club in Badin Lake, N.C., is currently ranked among the eight teams out of the NCAA East Region's north district which will qualify for the 1999 NCAA Regionals. The Terps were without standout junior Keith Unikel (Potomac, Md.) at last week's ACC event, however, and will hope to get him back into the lineup, and regroup, in two tournaments prior to regional qualification.
Next week, the Terps participate in the Furman Intercollegiate at the Furman University Golf Course.
TERPS SIXTH AT ACCs - RIVERA SMOKES FIELD IN FINAL TWO ROUNDS
Miguel Rivera (Bel Air, Md.) played his best golf of the year during
the final two days of the ACC Championships to record the second-best
combined score of the tourney's final 36 holes. Rivera shot 71 and 70
during his final two rounds to help lift Maryland from an eighth-place
standing after 18 holes to its final position in sixth place.
Maryland was without nationally-ranked junior Keith Unikel whose injured shoulder forced him to withdraw from the tournament on Friday morning. Rivera's 141 in the final 36 holes reflected his two best rounds of the season, and was second only to Duke's Matt Krauss whose seven-under 137 helped clinch the ACC's individual title. Rivera shot 78 in his opening round, and finished 10th overall.
