HARRISONBURG, Va. - James Madison University and the University of Maryland played to a 3-3 tie in college baseball this afternoon at JMU's Long Field. The game was called after 10 innings because of darkness. UM is now 3-6-1; JMU 1-7-1.
Maryland senior left fielder Eric Beer (3-for-5) scored on sophomore first baseman Chuck Easter's sacrifice fly in the foul territory of left field to tie the contest at 3-3 in the top of the ninth. Beer, whose solo homer tied the game at 2-2 in the seventh, singled with one out in the ninth. He advanced to third on senior shortstop Casey Trout's (2-for-4) single to left field.
The Dukes took a 3-2 lead in the seventh when senior right fielder Nate Turner delivered a two-out, RBI-single up the middle to drive home sophomore center fielder Rich Thompson. Thompson singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch and stole third base.
Maryland left-hander Tom Curtiss worked six innings in the starting assignment. He allowed two runs on seven hits, struck out seven and walked two. UM's Joe Hart, the Terps' third pitcher of the game, allowed just one hit in the final three innings.
JMU starter Nic Herr, a junior right-hander, allowed just four hits and struck out one in four innings of work. Herr, who had shoulder surgery in the fall, was on a limited pitch count. The Dukes used five pitchers in the game.
Junior right fielder Frank Valois and junior second baseman Jason Mohap had two hits apiece for the Terps. Sophomore catcher Greg Miller and freshman shortstop Dan Woodley had two hits apiece for the Dukes.
