COLLEGE PARK, Md - Rallying from a fifth-place standing after 36 holes to finish second in the Cleveland Golf Championships last weekend in Aiken, S.C., Maryland carries momentum into this week's Cleveland Invitational at the prestigious Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta, Ga.
The Terps, who completed six rounds of tournament play within a five-day span last week, travel to Forest Hills where they finished third in the same tournament a year ago. This week's 19-team tournament - 36 holes played on Saturday and the final 18 holes completed on Sunday - is hosted by Augusta State, the same team with which the Terrapins were tied in last week's Cleveland Championships.
Maryland (869, +17) turned in the lowest third round score of the tournament last Tuesday to rise three places in the standings. Terrapin junior Keith Unikel (213, E) shot a final round 70, one-under par, to finish in third place overall after a USGA scorecard playoff separated him from five others who were all even for the tournament. Unikel began the tournament with a season-low score of 68, three-under, but shot a 75 in the second round to remove him from medalist contention. Seniors Mike Deo (216, +3) and Pete Coughlin (216, +3) finished tied for 11th at the tournament hosted by Palmetto Golf Club in Aiken, S.C. Coughlin shot a 68 in the second round to match Unikel's first round score - both recording their lowest round of the spring.
Three days earlier, Maryland (876, +12) finished third at the Pepsi Intercollegiate, held at Bradford Creek Golf Club in Greenville, N.C. Junior Gary Mankulish (214, -2) paced the Terrapins with a third-place finish while Unikel (217, +1) finished 10th.
