COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Senior women's tennis player Sara Salam (Frankfurt, Germany) and the men's tennis team have earned academic honors from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) for the 1998 season.
Salam, who was the No. 6 seed on the Maryland women's team, was named an ITA Scholar-Athlete. All ITA Scholar-Athletes must be at least a junior in college, a varsity letterwinner and have at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA.
The men's tennis team was one of only 18 programs (out of 240 total) to be named an ITA All-Academic Team. ITA All-Academic teams must have a combined GPA of at least 3.2 for the most recent academic year. The 1998 men's team consisted of seniors Dale Cathell (Berlin, Md.), James Legat (Bethesda, Md.), and Jeff Wang (Silver Spring, Md.), juniors Kyle Cerminara (Hershey, Pa.) and T.J. Klier (Orchard Park, N.Y.) and freshmen Larry Chou (Potomac, Md.), Dan Kenshalo (Gaithersburg, Md.) and Laun Nguyen (Guam).
This was the first time that a Maryland team or individual has been awarded academic honors by the ITA. The ITA Scholar-Athlete and ITA All-Academic team awards were established in 1996.
