Softball Splits Doubleheader with Hofstra

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Senior Kelly Shipman hit her team-leading fifth home run of the season and won her 17th pitching game of the season as Maryland defeated Hofstra, 3-2, in game one of a doubleheader. Hofstra then returned the favor in the second game with four extra base hits and nine runs to win the nightcap, 9-3, at the North Fields Softball Complex here today.
Maryland's record is now 32-18 while Hofstra moves to 17-13. The Terps established a program record for home runs in a single season during the doubleheader as they smacked three round trippers to bring their season total to 24. The previous team record was 23 by the 1998 team.
The Terps scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning of game one to claim the come-from-behind victory. With one out, Shipman hit her fifth home run of the season to tie the game at two. Centerfielder Michelle Burrell then singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single to right by sophomore Chrissy Miller. The hit was Miller's second of the season and her second RBI of the season.
Junior Cortney Madea led the Terps in game one with three hits while Burrell added two singles. Sophomore Lisa Ciavardini and junior Alicia Smith added two hits each for the Flying Dutchwomen.
Hofstra scored two runs in each of the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings to gain the victory in the second game. Freshman Mari Shepard led Hofstra with three hits and one run scored. Junior Jen Smith added two hits and scored three runs; Alicia Smith had two hits and scored two runs and sophomore Lindsay Sawyer hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning.
Maryland scored three runs in the second inning. Senior Fawna Lackovic hit her first home run of the season and Burrell added her fourth of the season with two outs.
The Terps will play host to Georgia Tech in a two-game ACC series on Friday and Saturday. Friday's game begins at 4 p.m. and Saturday's at 1 p.m.
