at Missouri Tigers
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland won every set in both singles and doubles to sweep West Virginia, 9-0, on Feb. 28 in the Terrapins' home opener. Sophomore Chrissie Terrill (Plano, Tex.) improved her undefeated spring record to 6-0 by defeating Sharon Price by a score of 6-1, 6-3.
Senior Meg Griffin (Topeka, Kan.), junior Stacy Walkowitz (Coral Springs, Fla.) and freshman Courtney Perkins (Seattle, Wash.) improved their individuals records to 5-1. In doubles, the teams of Griffin and junior Lorraine Bittles (Nashville, Tenn.), as well as Terrill-Walkowitz remained perfect at 5-0.
The Terps will take on George Washington (0-2) this Wednesday, March 3, in the Tennis Bubble beginning at 1:30 p.m. Maryland blanked the Colonials last year in College Park, dropping only one set in singles play. Juniors Sarine Weingarten and Ghada Skaff lead GW this year.
GRIFFIN AND BITTLES HELP TO SINK CRIMSON TIDE FOR TEAM'S FOURTH WIN
On Saturday, Feb. 27, Maryland dominated Alabama by winning five singles and two doubles matches for a 7-2 victory at the McCormack-Nagelson Tennis Center on the William and Mary campus. Meg Griffin, Lorriane Bittles, Stacy Walkowitz and Chrissie Terrill all once again came out on top in both singles and doubles. At No. 6, Courtney Perkins won a decisive 6-2, 6-2 match.
NO. 10 WILLIAM & MARY OUTGUNS MARYLAND BY TAKING FIVE OF SIX IN SINGLES
Chrissie Terrill was the only Terp to survive in a 5-1 loss at No. 10 William & Mary, giving Maryland its first defeat of the 1999 season. Terrill, who improves her undefeated spring record to 4-0, topped Jessyca Arthur by a score of 7-5, 6-2 at the No. 5 singles position. Other previously undefeated Terps, Meg Griffin and Courtney Perkins both lost on the afternoon. William & Mary began the season winning seven straight matches including five ranked opponents. One of those victories was an upset of No. 2 Duke on Jan 29.
MARYLAND COACH JIM LAITTA
In his ninth season, Jim Laitta has taken what once was an underfunded program onto the national tennis scene. He has led the Terps to the school's first two NCAA appearances as well as finishes in the top half of the conference for the past few years. In 1996, he was named both ACC and NCAA Region I coach of the year by his peers. Before Maryland, he was the head women's coach at Mississippi State University. While there, the program finished in the national Top 20 and captured an NCAA doubles championship. Laitta played collegiately at Eastern Kentucky University where he was team captain and played No. 1 singles and doubles.
