October 14, 1998

COLLEGE PARK, Md.- Athletic Director Debbie Yow announced today the hiring of Wendy Marshall as the University of Marylands assistant womens gymnastics coach. Marshall will be an assistant to head coach Bob Nelligan.

Marshall earned a full athletic scholarship from the University of Michigan in 1993, and was a four-year varsity letterwinner and team MVP. She was the 1996 Gymnast of the Year, a 10-time All-American, and the co-captain for the 1995 and 1996 seasons. She also received the Phyllis Ocker Award for Academics and Athletics and the Bob Ufer Spirit Award in the 1996 season. Marshall graduated from Michigan in 1996 with a B.S. in kinesiology.

Each summer for the past five years, Marshall has been a member of the senior coaching staff at the University of Michigan Gymnastics Camp in Ann Arbor. From fall 1996 until the present, Marshall has been a physical education teacher, the head of the intramural program and head gymnastics coach for Pioneer High School in Ann Arbor. In both seasons, the gymnastics team won the conference championship.

In the 1997-1998 season, the Pioneer gymnastics team qualified for the regionals and had several individual state qualifiers and three All-Americans. They finished the season ranked No. 3, the second time in as many years that they had been ranked in the top 10. The team was ranked No. 8 for the 1996-1997 season, marking the first time in school history that the gymnastics program was ranked.

Prior to her work with Pioneer High School, Marshall was the assistant head coach at Twisters Gymnastics Center each summer from 1990-1996. At Twisters, she instructed age groups ranging from four to 18, levels five through elite.
