April 6, 1999
COLLEGE PARK, Md.- In a period of only 16 days, the Terps face seven ACC opponents making April the toughest month of the season. The brutal schedule also took the team on a 5,000-mile spring break tour to Florida and Arizona. After topping two stingy teams in Clemson and Georgia Tech, Maryland has no time to celebrate as it heads south for a three-match road trip into the heart of the ACC. On April 7, Maryland takes on No. 43 Virginia--a team that they upset in the ACC Tournament last year. The following weekend entails a trip to Tobacco Road against No. 27 North Carolina and No. 2 Duke.

TERRAPINS STING NO. 28 GEORGIA TECH FOR SECOND ACC WIN OF WEEKEND
For the second time in two days, the doubles team of junior Stacy Walkowitz (Coral Springs, Fla.) and sophomore Chrissie Terrill (Plano, Tex.) took the team on their backs and carried it to a critical ACC winnthis time over No. 28 Georgia Tech, 5-4.
After moving to the campus' tennis bubble due to a torrential downpour with two matches to go, the No. 41 Terps were forced into a tie, leaving the No. 2 team of Walkowitz and Terrill to decide the match.
In singles, only the top three positions were winners for the Terrapins. Senior Meg Griffin (Topeka, Kan.) and junior Lorraine Bittles (Nashville, Tenn.) both won in straight sets while Walkowitz took three for her win. Senior Adrienne Pavelko (Vienna, Va.) and freshman Courtney Perkins (Seattle, Wash.) were the other doubles winner on the afternoon.
WALKOWITZ AND TERRILL HANG ON TO HELP TERPS CLIP CLEMSON IN FINALE
Maryland won its first ACC match of the season as Stacy Walkowitz and Chrissie Terrill won a tight 8-6 decision in the finale to give the Terps a 5-4 decision over Clemson. Walkowitz and Terrill both lost in singles earlier during the afternoon, but took the pressure on their shoulders to gain the win. In singles, Lorraine Bittles, Adrienne Pavelko and freshman Courtney Perkins were all victorious.
MARYLAND COACH JIM LAITTA
In his ninth season, Jim Laitta (Eastern Kentucky e89) has taken what once was an underfunded program onto the national tennis scene. He has led the Terps to the school's first two NCAA appearances as well as finishes in the top half of the conference for the past few years. In 1996, he was named both ACC and NCAA Region I Coach of the Year by his peers. Before Maryland, he was the head women's coach at Mississippi State University. While there, the program finished in the national Top 20 and captured an NCAA doubles championship. Laitta played collegiately at Eastern Kentucky University where he was team captain and played No. 1 singles and doubles.
