Maryland's Sarver Named ACC Player of the Week

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Maryland, which is unbeaten in its last three games, plays host to William & Mary and Florida State this week. The Terps won two of their three games last week in defeating James Madison and No. 17 Virginia and forging a tie with No. 4 Connecticut. Maryland has won seven of its last nine games and has lost only once during that span. Since Sept. 18, the Terps have defeated three ranked teams (No. 9 Duke, No. 23 George Mason and No. 17 Virginia) and tied one ranked team (No. 4 Connecticut). The Terps two home games this week close out a four- game homestand on which they are currently undefeated at 1-0-1. After beginning the season with only one win in its first four games, Maryland has a 7-1-1 record.

SARVER SCORES TWO GAME-WINNING GOALS

Senior forward Keri Sarver (Massillon, Ohio) scored game- winning goals against both James Madison and No. 17 Virginia last week. Sarvers game-winner against JMU came 7:39 into the second half and her game-winner against Virginia came 5:36 into the first sudden-victory overtime period. Sarver is tied for the team lead with three game-winning goals this season and has scored a school-record 15 game-winning goals during her four-year career.

SARVER, HARBO CONTINUE TO MOVE UP ACC CHART

Keri Sarver scored a total of six points (two goals and two assists) last week to move into seventh place in the Atlantic Coast Conference total points category. Sarver passed former North Carolina All-American Debbie Keller with her first goal of the night against Virginia. Sarver, who was the ACC Player of the Week two weeks ago, has totaled 20 points (eight goals and four assists) in the last six games. Senior Emmy Harbo (Baton Rouge, La.) ranks 10th in ACC history.

ANOTHER PROGRAM FIRST UNDER KIRKUP

Marylands tie against No. 4 Connecticut marked the first time in the history of the Maryland program that the Terps had achieved a favorable result against a top 5 ranked team. Previously, the highest ranked team the Terps had gained a victory or tie against was No. 7 Duke during the 1995 season.

SARVER TO BECOME SCHOOL LEADER IN GAMES PLAYED

Senior forward Keri Sarver will become the all-time leader in career games played at the end of this week. She has currently played in 87 games during her career. The school record for career games played is 88 by Maureen McDonough (1993-96) and Michelle Salmon (1994-97). Sarver is also the schools all-time leader in goals (55), assists (33), total points (143), single season points (47, 1996), single season assists (15, 1996), career shots (249), game winning goals (15), hat tricks (4) and multiple goal games (17).

TERPS RANKED AGAIN LAST WEEK

Maryland was ranked in three of the four major polls last week for the second consecutive week. The Terps were ranked No. 24 by the NSCAA, No. 23 by Soccer News and No. 24 by Soccer Buzz. It marked the second consecutive week that the Terps were ranked.

BAUSMAN WITH CAREER-HIGH ASSISTS

Senior defender Abby Bausman (Glen Arm, Md.) has been credited with a career-high three assists this season. She was credited with an assist to Keri Sarver on the game-winning goal against James Madison. Bausmans previous single season career-high was two assists during the 1996 season.

MCCULLOUGH ALSO CLIMBING CHARTS

Senior midfielder Robin McCullough (Covington, Ga.) scored an unassisted goal against No. 4 Connecticut to bring her season total to three goals and her career total to 18. Her 18 goals ranks seventh all-time in school history while her 22 assists ranks third and her 58 total points puts her in fifth place. Maryland is undefeated in the three games (USC, NC State and Connecticut) in which she has scored this season.

SERRINS WITH SEVEN VICTORIES IN 1998

Sophomore goalkeeper Riki-Ann Serrins (Mission Viejo, Calif.) recorded two victories and a tie last week to raise her 1998 record to 7-1-1. Serrins, who has started nine of Marylands 13 games this season has improved her statistical numbers in nearly every category this season.

BEIRNE IN THE ASSIST COLUMN AGAIN

Freshman Courtney Beirne (Westminster, Md.) was credited with her third assist of the season against No. 4 Connecticut. Beirne and fellow freshman Carrie Klotz (Homer, N.Y.) are waging a friendly battle as to the highest scoring newcomer for the Terps this season. Both players currently have three total points.

GREER GAINS FIRST CAREER GOAL

Sophomore defender Terri Greer (Woodbrodge, Va./) scored her first career goal against No. 4 Connecticut. Her goal came with less than 12 minutes remaining in regulation to pull the Terps into a 2-2 tie with the previously undefeated and untied Huskies. Greer has started each of the Terps 13 games this season.
