DURHAM, N.C. -- In weekend ACC series that saw scores of 12-5 and 21-13 the first two days, the Sunday finale between Duke and Maryland didn't lack fireworks either as the Terps (10-13-1, 3-5 ACC) held on to defeat the Blue Devils (15-18, 0-6 ACC), 15-12, at Jack Coombs Field.
Duke trailed 15-5 going into the bottom of the sixth when the Blue Devils posted five runs on six hits to draw to within 15-10. Highlighting the Duke sixth were RBI hits by sophomore Wes Goodner (Tampa, Fla.), junior Ed Conrey (Levittown, Pa.), senior John Benik (Little Neck, N.Y.) and sophomore David Mason (Alexandria, Va.). Duke added to its comeback bid in the seventh with a pair of runs on a two-run homer by junior Vaughn Schill (Aubudon, N.J.), scoring freshman Scott Grossi (Wellington, Fla.), who doubled to lead off the inning.
However, Maryland sealed the win with an insurance run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly to center by Larry Long, scoring Brian Barton.
The Terrapins were led by Matt Swope, who was 4-for-6 on the day with two RBI and two runs scored. Duke's top hitter was Schill, who went 4-for-5 with a double, a home run, three RBI and three runs scored.
The win went to Terrapin starter Joe Hart, improving his record to 2-2 and the loss went to Blue Devil starter Ryan Caradonna (Tampa, Fla.), who drops to 2-1 on the year.
