COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Craig Munroe belted his team-leading seventh and eighth home runs, and Maryland cruised to its third and fourth consecutive victories Wednesday night as the Terrapins dispatched its state rivals from Eastern Shore, 9-3 and 9-4. Both games of the doubleheader were seven innings.
Marylands junior designated hitter from Ontario, Canada was more than the Hawks could handle in game one, going 2-for-3 at the plate including a fourth inning grand slam to command the Terps to a 7-0 advantage. His three-run blast in game two helped Maryland (17-18-1) overcome a 2-0 deficit and contribute to the only pair of offensive innings it would need.
Munroe finished the evening 4-for-6 with two home runs, seven RBI and three runs scored.
Senior pitcher Aaron McFarling (1-0) allowed just three hits in six innings to record the win in game one. He tossed a two-hitter through five innings, but allowed seven walks overall including a pair in the sixth. Myron Hayes double to left center drove in two Eastern Shore runs. The Hawks (7-32-1) scored a final run off of reliever Mike Ginsberg in the seventh.
Mike DArchangelo and Kevin McDonald, both of which had a pair of hits in the opener, had back-to-back RBI singles in the second inning to stake Maryland to a 2-0 lead. The Terps scored a third run on the help of a Munroe single and two errors in the third, and one inning later, Munroe returned to deliver the bases-loaded homer. Frank Valois had a two-run double to lift Maryland to a 9-0 lead in the fifth.
Playing first base in game two, Munroes second homer of the night handed Maryland a 3-2 lead. Three Hawk singles knotted the score in the top of the fifth, but that only set the stage for a six-run Terrapin fifth inning in which every run was scored with two out.
With two out and Matt Swope standing on second with a double, the merry-go-round began as the Terps sent 11 batters to the plate to help hand Ryan Fleetwood (1-2) his first victory and first complete game of the season. Munroe was hit by pitch before Jason Mohap singled to score Swope. Ray Gemmill singled to score Munroe and after a wild pitch brought Mohap to the plate, DArchangelo produced the Terps third straight single, scoring Gemmill. Subsequent singles would be added by Brian Barton and Larry Long.
Fleetwood scattered nine hits while going the distance, and striking out five. UMES added a solo homer in the top of the seventh by Duane Gaskins.
Maryland begins a three-game Atlantic Coast Conference series at Virginia beginning on Friday.
