RICHMOND, Va. - Freshman outfielder Matt Swope (New Carrolton, MD) went 3-4 with a home run and knocked in three runs, including the game-winner in the eighth, as the University of Maryland Terrapins defeated the University of Richmond Spiders 4-3 this afternoon at Pitt Field. Richmond had its seven-game winning streak snapped and fell to 32-12. Maryland improved to 21-23-1. The Spiders lost for just the second time at home in 24 games. The Terps won in Richmond for the first time since 1984.
Swope launched a two-run homer in the sixth to break a scoreless tie, his first home run of the season. His bunt single with two outs in the eighth plated Maryland's final run of the contest.
Richmond scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at 2-2. Senior pitcher Mike Dwyer (Stony Point, NY) led off the inning with a double and scored on a two-out double by sophomore outfielder Nic Jackson (Richmond, VA). Jackson came home on an RBI single by sophomore third baseman Ryan Martin (Mahwah, NJ).
The Spiders took the lead in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single by junior catcher Josh Lamberg (Ambler, PA).
The Terps used a walk, a sacrifice and an RBI double by junior outfielder Larry Long (Columbia, MD) to tie the game at 3-3 in the top of the eighth. Long moved to third on a groundout and came home on Swope's bunt hit to plate the deciding run.
Freshman righthander Todd Ainsworth (Hershey, PA) picked up the win in relief for the Terps, going 2.0 innings with four hits, three runs, two walks and three strikeouts. Sophomore righthander Jared Vogt (Pasadena, MD) struck out four over the final two innings without allowing a hit to record his first save of the spring.
Richmond will travel to Towson tomorrow for a 3:00 p.m. contest. Maryland will host Florida State in a three-game ACC series this weekend in College Park.
