COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland sophomore Christie Jenkins scored a team-high three goals and senior Cathy Nelson posted five assists to lead the third-ranked Terrapins to a 13-8 win over sixth-ranked James Madison this afternoon at a wet Ludwig Field. The win sends the Terrapins to the 1998 NCAA Final Four in Baltimore, Md. next weekend. It will mark the ninth consecutive season Maryland has advanced to the Championship weekend. The Terps are the defending three-time national champions, and it marks this year's senior class' fourth consecutive trip. Maryland improves to 16-3 overall while Madison falls to 11-8.
Maryland jumped on the board early off an assisted feed from Nelson to freshman Meredith Egan (28:28), and would score twice more before the Dukes would make their mark. Dukes sophomore Jess Marion connected off a free position shot at the 17 minute mark. She would score again at the 14 minute mark off a free position shot but the Terps answered with goals from Sascha Newmarch, Allison Comito, Jenkins and Quinn Carney. James Madison's Amy Brew scored two of her three goals on the afternoon in the first half, but Maryland took an 8-5 advantage into the half.
Maryland's defense would hold the Dukes' offensive attack silent for 11 minutes into the second half before junior Megan Riley scored off a free position at the 19 minute mark. Maryland was able to jump out to a 10-5 advantage before Riley's goal, but it was the Dukes who would halt the high-scoring Terp offense, not allowing a goal for nearly 11 minutes. At the 9:34 mark, Maryland senior Helena Herrmann ran the distance of the field after picking up the ground ball which resulted off of a Newmarch caused turnover and connected with Jenkins to end the Terp scoring drought. The Terp defense would hold check, however, allowing Madison only two more second-half goals, and outscoring the Dukes, 5-3.
"We played 60 minutes of lacrosse. We responded well in the second half by executing our offense and playing solid defense," said Maryland head coach Cindy Timchal.
"I think what made the difference in this game today was our (Maryland's) ability to attack the ground balls. Our attack played well the entire game, and we were constantly looking for the open person," said Maryland's Nelson.
"It was a disappointing loss. We fought the entire time. Maryland is a smart team and has smart players," said James Madison Jen Ulehla.
