COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Senior midfielder Anthony Saccone (Pt. Washington, N.Y.) and sophomore attackman Brian Tower (Hicksville, N.Y.) scored three goals each to lead Adelphi (10-3) to an 11-8 victory over C.W. Post (11-3) and earned the Panthers their second straight NCAA Division II men's lacrosse championship at Ludwig Field. It marks the second straight season that Adelphi has defeated C.W. Post to win the national championship.
Saccone scored two first-half goals and one second-half goal. He earned most outstanding player honors of the championship game. Saccone scored Adelphi's first goal of the game to bring the Panthers to within 2-1; gave them a 3-2 lead at the 7:11 mark of the first quarter and scored the Panthers' eighth goal to put the eventual champions up 8-4.
Adelphi broke the game open with five consecutive goals in the third and fourth quarters. Junior midfielder Dan Melody (Hicksville, N.Y.) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal with 2:31 remaining in the third quarter. It was an extra-man goal for the Panthers. Adelphi then scored four consecutive goals to take a 9-4 lead. It received goals from senior midfielder Chris Babb (Ridge, N.Y.), Kris Amplo (Farmingville, N.Y.), Saccone and Tower.
C.W. Post scored the final three goals of the game to close within 11-8. Senior midfielder Todd Bolognese (Levittown, N.Y.) and freshman midfielder Drew Cavadias (Melville, N.Y.) scored two goals each for the Pioneers.
Adelphi senior goalie Greg Kulesa (Garden City, N.Y.) recorded 13 saves while C.W. Post's Vin Fredericks (Lindenhurst, N.Y) was credited with 12 stops.
