TERP GOLFERS TO FURMAN IN FINAL REGULAR SEASON TOURNAMENT
Seeking to secure a bid in the NCAA East Regionals in May,
the Maryland Terrapins embark on their final regular season
tournament this week, at the Furman University Golf Course
in Greenville, S.C.
Maryland, ranked 32nd, 34th and 38th in national polls released last week, travels to Furman this week following its third-place tie at the Wofford Invitational, last Friday and Saturday. Marked by the return of Keith Unikel (Potomac, Md.) whose shoulder injury sidelined him two weeks ago for the Atlantic Coast Championships, the Terps registered their finest effort of the season at Wofford, shooting seven-over as a team and finishing with their best par 72 score of the season (871).
TERPS PUT THREE IN TOP 13
A week after Miguel Rivera (Bel Air, Md.) played his best
golf of the year, Gary Mankulish (Laurel, Md.) turned in his
finest outing at last weekend's Wofford Invitational.
Coupled with another strong showing by Rivera and the return of Unikel, the Terps recorded their finest team finish of the season. Mankulish (214, -2) finished tied for sixth after firing 70 in each of the first two rounds. They marked his low round of the spring and helped him to his second sub-par tournament this year.
Rivera and Unikel both tied for 13th and both shot rounds under par. Unikel's second round 68 matched the low round of the tournmant. Rivera shot 72 and 71 in his final rounds to record his second straight top 15 finish - his best two tournaments of the season.
MAKING THEIR BID
Heading into the ACC Championships two weeks ago, Maryland
was sixth out of eight teams expected to qualify for the
NCAA East Regionals, May 20-22 at Barrington, R.I., holding
a narrow lead in Golfstat statistical rankings over Augusta
State and Duke. The Terps stumbled briefly at the ACCs after
the loss of Unikel, and saw Duke finish above them and
Virginia move close behind. The Cavaliers continued their
push for a regional bid while taking team honors at Wofford,
but Maryland rebounded strong to top Duke. The Terps make
their final bid to retain their regional status at this
week's tournament at Furman.
TEAM RANKINGS
Maryland was ranked 32nd by Golfstat last week, 34th in
the MasterCard CGF Rankings and 38th in the Golfweek/Sagarin
ratings. Individually, junior Keith Unikel is ranked 49th in
the latest Golfstat Cup Rankings for college men's golf
individuals. He is 90th in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin
ratings.
