ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Willie Stewart's two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted UNC Asheville to a 6-5 win over ACC foe Maryland at Greenwood Field Tuesday afternoon.
The win by the Bulldogs (6-18-0) snapped a three-game losing streak, while the Terps fell to 4-10-1.
The see-saw affair saw the team exchange the lead five times before UNC Asheville took the lead for good in the bottom of the eighth. Steve Deyo led the inning off with a single. Two outs later, Jimmy Gemler walked to put runners on first and second. A passed ball put runners on second and third. Stewart then roped a 2-0 pitch down the right-field line to score both Deyo and Gemler for a 6-5 UNCA lead.
In the top of the ninth, freshman reliever Judson Ballard (1-0) picked up his first career decision by getting Maryland out in order.
The game was scoreless until the top of the fifth when Maryland scored first on an sacrifice fly from Casey Trout.
UNC Asheville came back in the bottom of the inning when Troy Stortz drove in two runs on an RBI-double to make it 2-1. The Terps got two runs in the top of the seventh on a two-run single from Eric Beer to make it 3-2.
But the Bulldogs bounced back in the bottom of the seventh when Stortz hit a two-run inside the park to push the Asheville back to 4-3.
Maryland roared back in the top of the eighth when Matt Swope and Kevin McDonald delivered RBI-singles to push the Terps in front 5-4.
The Bulldogs and Maryland will play the second of their two-game series Wednesday at Greenwood Field beginning at 1 p.m.
