TERRAPIN LINKSTERS OPEN SPRING SCHEDULE IN CHARLOTTE
The Maryland men's golf team competes for the first time this spring
when it travels this weekend to the Queen City to take part in the
Second Annual Birkdale Collegiate Golf Classic. Sponsored by the
Charlotte Sports Commission and co-hosted by UNC Charlotte and Davidson
College, the tournament is played on a par-72 track that covers 7,013-
yards. Designed by Arnold Palmer, the Birkdale course was voted the
state's "best new course" in 1997.
The Terps join 17 other schools at this week's tournament which begins on Friday morning. Other participants are: Augusta State, College of Charleston, Colorado State, Davidson College, East Carolina, Furman, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, North Carolina, Old Dominion, Purdue, Rhode Island, UNC Charlotte, Virginia Commonwealth, Virginia Tech and Wofford College.
SPRING OUTLOOK
During the fall, Maryland golf finished in the top five in four of
its five tournaments. This spring, more of the same is expected. Head
coach Tom Hanna has revived the Maryland golf program in recent years,
and is continuing to raise it to the highest collegiate level. After
losing just one individual from the fall, Hanna relies on the experience
of six upperclassmen, including senior co-captains Pete Coughlin
(Berwick, Pa.), Mike Deo (Milford, N.J.) and Miguel Rivera (Bel Air,
Md.), and the addition of a highly-touted freshman, Brit Musser (North
Potomac, Md.).
A key to the Terps' success, however, may lie in the strength of junior golfers Keith Unikel (Potomac, Md.) and Gary Mankulish (Laurel, Md.). Unikel paced Maryland through five fall tournaments with a 72.35 average and eight sub-par performances. Mankulish, fourth with a 74.07 clip, turned in the Terps' best round last fall with a 65 at the G. Gunby Jordan Intercollegiate and is Maryland's best driver. Rivera, in his fourth college season, was right behind Unikel in fall tournaments, averaging 72.45.
