Softball Places Third at Louisville Slugger Classic

February 7, 1999

TAMPA, Fla. - Senior pitcher Kelly Shipman snapped a personal two-game losing streak by pitching the University of Maryland softball team to a 1-0 victory Sunday over sixth-ranked South Florida on the final day of the Louisville Slugger Classic.

Despite the loss, host South Florida captured the tournament title with a 4-1 record. Northwestern also finished with a 4-1 record, but lost 7-2 to South Florida in a head-to-head matchup on Friday.

Maryland, which went 3-2 in the tournament, finished in third place in the six-team tourney.

Shipman, the Terps' All-America candidate, was tagged with losses in her first two starts on Friday and Saturday. On Sunday, however, she rebounded to toss a four-hit shutout at South Florida and capture her first victory of the season and 55th of her career. It was the 33rd shutout of Shipman's career. Shipman walked two and struck out five batters.

Maryland scored the only run it needed in the fourth inning when center fielder Michelle Burrell drove in shortstop Jennifer Potzman. USF's Jennifer Thompson, who took the loss, allowed just two hits.

Shipman and designated hitter Cortney Madea were each named to the all-tournament team. Madea went 5 for 13 at the plate with a pair of RBIs during the three-day tournament.

The Terps, who opened their fifth varsity campaign here this weekend, head west next weekend to participate in the Fiesta Bowl Tournament at Arizona State University. The Terps will face another top 10 team, No. 8 Nebraska, in their opening game on Friday.
