TERPS TAKE ON MOUNTAINEERS, TIGERS AND HIGHLANDERS: This Friday, the Terrapins will travel to Morgantown, W.V., to take on East Atlantic Gymnastics rival University of West Virginia for the first time this season. Also competing in the meet will be the Auburn University Tigers and the Radford University Highlanders.
THE LAST TIMES: Maryland's last regular season meeting against the Mountaineers and the Tigers came during the 1991 season when Maryland faced both teams in one meet. Maryland scored 180.050 while West Virginia scored 184.950 and Auburn 187.550. The Terrapins' last regular season meeting against the Highlanders came in Maryland's last meet of the 1997 season. In the meet, the Terrapins posted an all-time Maryland record with a 193.800 team score and an all-time Maryland record on vault with a score of 48.750. Individually, sophomore Rachel Dolbin, last year's EAGL Rookie Gymnast of the Year, tied a Terrapin all-time individual record on floor with a 9.850 and set a Terrapin all-time individual record in the all-around with a score of 39.150.
STATE OF MARYLAND WINS INTERSTATE BATTLE: This past Saturday, Maryland posted a season-high 191.700 and seniors Stacy Breidenbach (Hillsdale, N.J./Pleasant Valley (Pa.)) and Megyn Byrnes (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) finished first and second in the all-around competition as the University of Maryland finished second overall and helped the state of Maryland (University of Maryland and Towson University) defeat the state of North Carolina (University of North Carolina and North Carolina State University) 383.375 - 382.775. Individually, North Carolina State won the overall competition with a 192.125, with Maryland finishing closely behind with 191.700. Towson University followed with a 191.675 and the University of North Carolina scored 190.650. In addition to setting a season-high team score, Maryland also set season-highs in two of four events as they scored a 48.100 on vault and 48.0 on floor.
KILLER B'S ON THE SWARM: After five meets, seniors Breidenbach and Byrnes have been the dominant force for the Terrapins this season, which was evident at this past Saturday's Governor's Cup. Breidenbach captured her second all-around title this season by scoring a season-high 38.575. She also finished third on beam with a 9.675 and fourth on floor with a season-high 9.675. Byrnes took second place in the all-around, finishing with a season-high 38.475. In addition, Byrnes recorded season-highs on vault (9.625), beam (9.725) and floor (9.700), and her scores on beam and floor earned her second place finishes in both. Breidenbach and Byrnes have competed in all five meets this season, with Breidenbach competing in the all-around competition four times, finishing first overall twice and third overall twice. Byrnes has competed in the all-around three times, finishing first overall twice and second overall once.
