MOBILE, Ala.--Former Maryland baseball standout Kevin Haverbusch competed in last night's Double A All Star game, which was held in Mobile, Ala. Haverbusch, who plays for the Pittsburgh Pirates' Double A affiliate based in Altoona, was on the National League Team last night. The National Double A All-Stars defeated the American League Double A All-Stars 3-0. In his two plate appearances last night, Haverbusch struck out both times.
Although he played shortstop during his college career, Haverbusch has made a smooth transition to third base in the professional ranks. Heading into the all-star break, he was hitting .272 with 11 home runs and 44 RBI for the Altoona Curves.
In 1997, Haverbusch was the MVP of the New York-Penn Rookie League after hitting .311 with 10 home runs and 55 RBI. Last year, he moved up to the Pirates' Class A affiliate in Lynchburg, where he hit .331 with eight home runs and 39 RBI in 49 games. Haverbusch was promoted to the Double A ranks early this year.
In his senior year at Maryland (1997), Haverbusch led the Terps in hitting (.406), home runs (16) and RBI (44). He was one of the team's co-captains that season and was drafted by the Pirates in the 20th round of the 1997 Major League Baseball draft.
