SAN DIEGO - Terp soccer alum Leo Cullen participated as a reserve this past weekend in the Major League Soccer (MLS) All-Star game held in San Diego, Calif. Cullen, a defenseman, represented the Miami Fusion as part of the East All-Star squad. It was the West, however, who came out on top with a 6-4 victory when the clock ticked down on the high-scoring affair. Cullen played the second half, substituting for the D.C. United's Jeff Agoos after the break.
The first pick overall in the 1998 MLS draft, Cullen is in his second year in the league with the Miami Fusion. He led the team last year in three categories, minutes played with 2680 as well as games played and games started (31/30). He scored one goal and had four assists for the Fusion last year in its inaugural season. One of the top candidates for 1998 MLS Rookie of the Year, he played his way into the U.S. National Team pool.
Cullen played for the University of Maryland from 1994-97. During his career he was an All-American and All-Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) selection. The ACC Player-of-the-Year in 1997, the Minneapolis-native is tied for seventh on the school's career-assists chart with 15 assists. The Terrapins had a combined 57-24-7 record (12-8-4 in the ACC) while Cullen wore the red and black, and were the ACC Champions in 1996.
Cullen is one of five former Maryland players currently in the MLS. Terp classmates Andy Kirk and R.T. Moore team up again for the Tampa Bay Mutiny, while Judah Cooks and Jason Bent represent Maryland with the D.C. United and Colorado Rapids.
