PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. - Maryland senior Gary Mankulish has blasted his way deep into the third round of the U.S. Amateur Golf Championships this week at Pebble Beach.
Mankulish, one of three top players to lead the Terrapins to their first NCAA Regional appearance in five seasons last spring, qualified for the U.S. Amateur on July 27 by besting Maryland teammate Keith Unikel as part of a 3-for-2, one hole playoff. Regarded as the Terps' best long ball hitter, Mankulish shot 150 (+7) in Tuesday's stroke-play qualifying at Spyglass Hill Golf Club (par 72, 6,828 yards) and Pebble Beach Golf Links (par 71, 6,828 yards), as the field was reduced from 312. He qualified in 33rd place, filling one of 64 positions for match play which began on Wednesday.
Wednesday, the U.S. Amateur was marked by upsets galore as the top three-seeded players were eliminated, including 1997 U.S. Amateur champion Matt Kuchar of ACC rival Georgia Tech. Another Tech star, Bryce Molder, looms as Mankulish's chief opponent on Thursday, after the Laurel, Md., native downed Charles Howell of Augusta, Ga., on Wednesday.
