COLLEGE PARK, Md.-- - The University of Maryland is steeped in athletic tradition from basketball championships to lacrosse lore going back through the years. Now, the university is the home of something else that is truly unique and special, this time on the soccer field. With the hiring of Shannon Higgins-Cirovski on Jan. 13, 1999, Maryland became one of only two Division I institutions in the country to have a husband-and-wife duo coach both soccer programs. Sasho Cirovski has been the men's head coach at Maryland since 1993 and with Higgins-Cirovski at the helm, the women's program began a new era at Maryland and the words 'soccer family' took on new meaning for the Terrapins.
The Washington Post focused on the coaching pair in an article that appeared on Aug. 20, 1999. Cirovski and Higgins-Cirovski are currently holding training sessions for their respective teams before classes begin on Sept. 1. The No. 3 men's team opens action in the University of Maryland/Fila Preseason College Kick-off Tournament on Aug. 27 and 28, at Ludwig Field. The team then begins the regular season against No. 1 Indiana at the adidas Classic at Indiana on Sept. 3. The Terrapin women's team kicks-off the 1999 season on Aug. 29 at George Washington where Higgins-Cirovski has held the head coaching post the last seven seasons.
