COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland's Emily Janss (Brandon, Fla.) scored with eight seconds left in regulation to lift the Terps to a 1-0 win over American in a scrimmage at Ludwig Field on Thursday.
Janss scored off an assist from freshman Lindsay Givens (Downingtown, Pa.) on a scramble in front of the net off a throw in.
Head coach Shannon Higgins-Cirovski was very happy with the Terps in their scrimmage.
"I feel pleased that we were able to pull it out at the end," said the new Maryland coach. "As the game went on we showed a lot of character. We can build on this.
"The older players stepped up at the end. It was good for Janss, Terri Greer (Woodbridge, Va.) and Jackie Mynarski (Somers, N.Y.) to show character. And, Julie Nelson (McLean, Va.) provided a real spark when she was in there.
Higgins-Cirovski also cited several newcomers for their solid play.
"Forward Sara Gustafson (Reisterstown, Md,) showed her experience out there," said Higgins-Cirovski. "Carly Viher (Mentor, Ohio), Sally Harrison (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Lindsay Givens looked very organized out on defense and Harrison is tough as nails."
The Terps open the regular season on Sunday, as they travel to George Washington to battle Higgins-Cirovski's old team at 1 p.m. at South Riding Field on Loudon, Va.
