Homecoming for Salmon
The Terps will see a familiar face on the opposing sidelines Wednesday night as UMBC assistant coach Michelle Salmon returns to College Park. Salmon, a four-year standout for the Terps, played from 1994-1997. She earned All-Region honors from Soccer Buzz in 1996. She ranks tied for 9th on the all-time Maryland scoring list with 35 points with current Terp senior Jackie Mynarski (Somers, N.Y.) and Tricia Taliaferro (1992-94).

The Series With UMBC
The Terps hold a commanding 7-1 edge in the all-time series with the Retrievers. Maryland and UMBC have not played since 1996, when the Terps topped the Retrievers, 8-0. Maryland has outscored UMBC 24-4 in the eight all-time meetings, recording shutouts in 1988 (1-0), 1990 (3-0), 1991 (2-0), 1993 (3-0), 1995 (3-0) and 1996 (8-0).

Homecoming for Serrins
Junior goalie Riki-Ann Serrins (Mission Viejo, Calif.) will return to her home state as a college player for the first time when the Terps venture out to Los Angeles. Serrins, who attended Santa Margarita High School, also played for the Mission Viejo Shamrocks club team in Southern California. Last season, Serrins was a second-team all-ACC performer recording a 1.32 goals against average and a 9-3-1 record.

The Series With USC
Maryland topped USC in the only meeting between schools in the Maryland/PUMA Invitational, 3-0 last fall on Sept. 11, 1998. Maryland received goals from seniors Keri Sarver, Robin McCullough and then-freshman Carrie Klotz (Cortland, N.Y.), her first career goal. Riki-Ann Serrins made four saves for the shutout.

The Series With UCLA
Monday's contest with UCLA will be the first between the Terps and Bruins. Maryland has a 3-1 all-time record against schools from California with wins over St. Mary's, San Diego and USC. The lone loss came to Santa Clara in the 1997 George Mason Tournament.

Maryland Tops GW 2-0 In Opener
LOUDON, Va. -- A new era in Maryland women's soccer got off on the right foot as the Terrapins defeated rival George Washington, 2-0, at South Riding Field on Sunday. The win was especially sweet for new Maryland head coach Shannon Higgins-Cirovski, who defeated the school she coached at for seven years from 1991-1997.

"It feels really good to get the monkey off our back right away," said Higgins-Cirovski. "Going against GW and getting the rivalry out of the way in the first game with a win was very special."

The Terps (1-0) jumped on top as senior midfielder Emily Janss (Brandon, Fla.) scored from inside the box on a scramble off a pass from freshman forward Valerie Lawrence (Silver Spring, Md.), just 28:31 into the match. Freshman defender Sally Harrison (Virginia Beach, Va.) was also credited with an assist.

After outshooting the Colonials, 6-1 in the first half, Maryland came out strong in the second half and converted its second tally of the game as freshman forward Kim King (Media, Pa.) blasted home her first collegiate goal from just outside the top of the box at the 74:10 mark. Senior midfielder Jackie Mynarski (Somers, N.Y.) and sophomore Courtney Beirne (Westminster, Md.) were credited with assists on the goal.

The Terps outshot the Colonials 13-2 in the game as junior goalie Ali Wolff (Richmond, Va.) made just one save to record her seventh career solo shutout.

Valerie Lawrence also started at forward and picked up her first college assist on Emily Janss goal at the 28:31 mark. Lawrence led all Terps in shots with three.

Kim King made a triumphant debut scoring on her first college shot with 15:50 left in regulation time.

Dana Jarzyniecki (Rochester, N.Y.) also played in her initial college game subbing in prior to halftime.

Nelson Returns To Action
After missing the entire 1998 season after undergoing back surgery, senior forward Julie Nelson (McLean, Va.) made a successful return to the field in regular-season action in Sunday's win over George Washington. Nelson entered the game as a sub for Sara Gustafson (Reisterstown, Md.) in the 28th minute and played 43 minutes.

Mynarski In The Top 10
Jackie Mynarski moved into the top 10 in all-time points scored at Maryland with an assist on Kim King's second-half goal. It's A Family Affair
With the hiring of Shannon Higgins-Cirovski on Jan. 13, 1999, Maryland became the only major Division I school in the nation to have a husband-and-wife tandem coaching soccer at the same institution. Maryland men's coach Sasho Cirovski, who has coached the Terps since 1993, has taken the men's program to new heights with last season's appearance in the national semifinals, its first since 1969.

Higgins-Cirovski came to Maryland after coaching the United States Under-18 team, a team which she led to an undefeated record in 1998. Prior to her stint with the national team, Higgins-Cirovski coached George Washington for seven seasons, leading the Colonials to a 69-59-11 (.539) record during her tenure. She led GW to its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 1996, while earning Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year. She also earned the honor in 1994.

Higgins-Cirovski had a decorated career as a player at North Carolina, graduating in 1990. She was named Soccer America's National Player of the Year in 1988 and 1989 and consensus national Player of the Year in 1989. Over her four-year career at Chapel Hill, the Tar Heels won four national titles compiling an 89-0-6 record.
